My personal philosophies for teaching were influenced from my personal experience of being a student in K-12 classrooms through to my experience as a post-secondary education student. My most recent philosophies for classroom management were developed from my recent pre-service teaching experiences. I believe that successful classroom management leads to the creation of an enriching learning environment that is crucial for active learning.
- Students are a product of their environment, each coming from a unique background.
- Teachers should hold the highest of expectations of their students every day.
- Classrooms should be an open, safe, and inclusive community for all.
- Behaviour assessments and learning assessments should be conducted separately.
- Teachers should model the behaviour expected of their students as this may be the only place a student has examples of conducting themselves appropriately.
- Clear, established routines are key to a well ordered and strong functioning classroom.
- Moving towards student-led learning theories can foster student led behaviour management.
- Flexible classroom seating does not work without flexible instruction.
- Reward positive behaviour when required. Do not over praise.
- Always demonstrate patience.
